"He taught him horsemanship, archery and how to wield lasso, rein and stirrup, and what and when and how, the rites of of convivial society, of formal ceremony and the symposium; hawking, falconry and how to hunt with the cheetah; what was justice or the lack of it; what the throne and the crown meant; how to deliver orations and how to go to war and lead an army."

Aphorism
""A person who is nice to you but rude to the waiter is not a nice person."
Yep- I have just spent a week with a Jazz course crowd who treated a hard working waitress as if she was invisible! - I demonstrated how to appreciate her, and embarrassed some . It turned out she had just completed a 5yr French law degree, and was about to begin further studies to become an international Corporate Lawyer

Did I ever tell you about the United Methodist minister, pastor of a "progressive" congregation in Denver (we were friends with his wife), who went ballistic in a Vietnamese restaurant in Philadelphia because they would not take credit cards?
He made such a scene that I thought the cook would come out from the kitchen and "sort him out" with a cleaver.
It was one of M's sister's and her husband's neighborhood hangouts, so we were mainly embarrassed for them.

I've heard a slightly different version
"If they are nice to you and mean to the waiter, how they are to the waiter is how they really are."
